Dance Specialty Class Descriptions:

Contemporary– A mixture of dance genres– classical ballet, modern, lyrical, and jazz that focuses on unexpected movements, self-expression, and freedom paired with a strong focus on technique.

Ballet– A theatrical art form using dancing, music, and scenery to convey a story, theme, or atmosphere. Conventional poses and steps are combined with light-flowing figures (such as leaps and turns).

Pointe– Classical ballet technique that concerns pointe work, ballet dancers support all body weight on the tips of fully extended feet. The instructor will recommend when your dancer is ready for pointe work.

Tap Dance– This class teaches a variety of steps that focus on timing, musicality, and rhythm. Warm-up, across-the-floor progressions, and center combinations.

Hip Hop– This class teaches a vibrant form of dance that combines a variety of freestyle movements to create a cultural piece of art. Exposure to popping, locking, and breaking as well as grooves and polyrhythmic movement.

Tumbling– Class involves the performance of exercises requiring physical strength, agility, and coordination. Flexibility and floorwork include skills based on level.

Stretch/Flexibility/Conditioning– This class strengthens your dancer's flexibility– one of the most important aspects of dance. It is also paired with conditioning exercises to increase dancers' stamina and fitness.

Technique: Got Legs? This class focuses on your dancer's legs down through their ankles/toes to perfect those straight lines so your dancer can grow in their love of technique for dance. Great for jazz dancers or anyone who wants to compete next season to prep them.

Tiny Tot Movement– Offers exposure to general physical movement and coordination alongside a parent. Two children may attend class with one adult. Grippy socks and comfy clothing. Skirts are not preferred. Parents, please wear socks.

Ballet and Tap

Ballet- Classical form of dance. A solid technical base for all other dance forms. Barre, adagio, center floor, and progressions (movements across the floor) are all used in developing ballet techniques.

Pointe-In ballet, dancing that is performed on the tips of the toes.

Tap- Style of dance using special shoes to create different rhythms and sounds. Great for developing coordination skills.

Hip Hop, Breakdance, Adult Fusion

Hip Hop-Fun & energetic freestyle dance form that can be seen in music videos. Relaxed atmosphere and dress code.

Breakdance- A style of urban dance that combines energetic footwork with tumbling and spins, usually performed to funk music.

Adult Fusion Class– Enjoy this mix of Hip Hop, Lyrical, and Jazz for our adult dancers! Always something fun, fresh, and new for you! Come join us for some alone time challenging your mind and body!

Jazz, Lyrical, Modern, Contemporary

Jazz- Any of various dances characterized by improvisation, influenced by rhythms and techniques of jazz music to the more popular music of today.

Lyrical- Intense emotional expression of face and body to tell a story through song.

Modern- A theatrical dance style that rejects classical ballet's limitations and favors movement derived from the expression of inner feeling. For the advanced dancer only.

Contemporary- A genre of concert dance that employs compositional philosophy, rather than choreography, to guide un-choreographed movement. It uses dance techniques and methods found in ballet, modern dance, and postmodern dance, and it also draws from other philosophies of movement that are outside the realm of classical dance techniques.

Pom, Cheer, Gymnastics, Flexibility

Pom- A precise, sharp form of dance showcasing the use of poms for effect.

Cheerleading- Teaches motion placement, sidelines, cheers, jumps, and cheerleading technique. A cheer dance routine is also taught with poms.

Gymnastics– Involves the performance of exercises requiring physical strength, agility, and coordination. Flexibility and floor work include rolls, straddles, cartwheels, round-offs, walkovers, handsprings, aerials, & tucks.

Flexibility– A class dedicated explicitly to those dancers who want to focus on becoming more limber and learn the proper stretching techniques.

Specialty Classes

Step Aerobics- A great way to get fit and energized! A cardio/fitness class to burn calories and get in shape.

Musical Theater-A Broadway style jazz class intertwined with theatrical performance that applies songs, spoken dialogue, acting, and dance.

Cardio Dance/ Stretch/ Strengthen- Blends various dance styles like hip hop and modern to create a fun workout that tones while building coordination and stamina. Callanetics and Yoga are incorporated.

Children's Intro to Acting- Play with body movement, vocal and storytelling, and improvisation games.

Acting- A studio acting class that incorporates a range of exercises and activities to help actors develop and refine their skills. These exercises may include various improvisation games, sensory exercises, character analysis, voice and speech exercises, and physical movement exercises. Movement/character/voice/text

Line Dancing-Get ready for some fun as you learn the most popular line dances. Various genres and styles are taught each week. Launch your new hobby today!

Tiny Tot Movement- Offers general physical movement and coordination exposure for students ages 18 months-36 months alongside their parent. The focus will be on learning basic gross motor skills and vocabulary through play, songs, games, and exploration. The class format will include circle time, station rotations, whole group games, and yoga. Parents will learn as much as the kids and the bonding experience will be absolutely memorable. This is a wonderful class to help understand your child's interest/ strength to establish future class placement. Two children may join with one adult. No recital performance, but students will enjoy an in-class winter celebration.
Pop Starz Class– Each week learn a new combo and choreography from a different Pop Star! Class will mostly focus on hip hop/jazz-funk.

Improvisational Class– Dancers will spontaneously create movement structured around a movement task or idea. Development of material is facilitated through a variety of creative explorations including body mapping through levels. Shape and dynamics schema.

Tricks/ Turns/Jumps/Lifts Class– Technique-specific class to master various tricks/turns/jumps/ partner lifts. Focuses on strengthening your dancer's skills and perfecting your spotting, jumping higher, knee and ankle lines, and form.

Intro to Ballroom Class– Our Intro to Ballroom class focuses on four dances: Waltz, Tango, Cha-Cha, and Jive. Two of these dances are taught each month. The class will focus on hip placement and body awareness. Ladies, you will need a pair of ballroom dance shoes or character shoes for the class. Partners are encouraged, but not necessary.

Intro to Acro– This class will focus on balance and flexibility. Students will work on perfecting the art of splits, bridges, various rolls (including rock and roll from standing to standing), Teddy Bear stands, handstands (L handstands), and cartwheels.

Intro to the Upside Down– This class will primarily focus on back flexibility with various bridges, kick overs, and front limbers. Headstands, handstands, cartwheels on both sides, one-handed cartwheels, round-offs, and rolls. This class is for students with previous tumbling/acro experience.

The Upside Down– This class is designed for students looking to clean up and perfect their acro skills. We will focus on straight legs and correct form in back walkovers. We will step up our walkovers by covering one-handed walkovers and ticktocks. An introduction to some fun acro tricks, including headsprings, Valdez, chin stands, scales, scorpions, cartwheels from kneeling, elbow stands, illusions, and partner skills.

Advanced Acro– For students looking to step up their acro game! We will cover drills for proper Handsprings (front/back), back tucks ariels (front/side), and tumbling passes. Additional advanced tricks taught require superior back flexibility.

Summer Dancers Book Club– Each week dancers will read a book related to dance and then make that book come to life by dancing out the themes. Classes are filled with many activities that improve child development, creativity, coordination, and learning including a take-home activity each week.

Burn Baby Burn! - A low-impact class that incorporates light weights, lots of reps, and some cardio. You will need to bring your own 2,3 or 5-lb. weights. Great for toning and getting in shape.
